A lot has changed since his days in the 80s as a teenage heartthrob. This year, George Michael tours throughout Europe with an orchestra of over 40 people. And this time, he does not sing the obvious danceable tunes, but he will perform a carefully chosen selection of his songs, spanning all his 30-year career. And he covers some of his favorite songs from other artists in an atmosphere that resembles a 30s New York night club. We were pleasantly surprised to hear a jazzy version of Rihanna's Russian Roulette, but were truly impressed when he sang This Mortal Coil's classic Song To The Siren.

She is said to be one of the best live acts ever: Tori Amos. And we truly enjoyed her concert this weekend. But we were also blown away by her support act: Mark Hole. All alone on stage, Mark with a K played the piano and touched us deeply with his haunting voice. He launched his first and only EP two years ago, but we are convinced that the presence of his bubbly personality on the Tori Tour will prove to be the kick off of a brilliant career.

Leading ladies Viktoriya and Oxana liked the subtle, colourful and elegant styles of C-ZONE from the moment they saw them and were determined to become the distributor in Russia. At this year's Silmo, we could finalise all conditions to get started. The new styles were sent to Moscow immediately after the show in Paris, because our latest distributor wants to present the styles to their customers as soon as possible. We have been silent lately…working hard on the next collection. Besides, we have been travelling internationally quite a bit. When we are abroad, we always make sure that we see the latest motion pictures. On our latest journey, we saw two excellent movies that were strangely linked. Both dealt with the theme of sorrow and unhappiness and both showed very strong women: Michelle Williams is superb in the heartbreaking ‘Blue Valentine’ and Nicole Kidman is very powerful in the intimate ‘Rabbit Hole’. And good to see that the botox is no longer working for her…she becomes a real woman again.

Recently, Luxottica presented the most important optical trends for 2011. Who imagined that John Lennon’s circled frame is expected to be the hit this summer? The design has somehow become a symbol of the 1960s counter culture.
Next month, during our presentation at MIDO 2011, we happen to introduce an updated version this classic. It still has the round lenses, but we used stainless steel with a gloss finishing and it will be on the market in funky colour combinations. But don’t worry, it still has the love and peace atmosphere.

They are a classic: these Beaufort eyeglasses in a chestnut acetate front. They gave Harrison Ford his nerdy appearance as archeology professor Henry Jones. We still have no clue what happened to his glasses when he turned into Indiana on the search for The Ark of The Covenant. Did it not only give him a whip, but 20/20 vision as well?
In the upcoming collection, we might just have a cool updated version of this model for him. Our new model N3123 would turn Harrison really handsome.

We still mourn over the fact that Petephilly and Perquisite decided to split up last October. But luckily, Perq worked hard on a solo album inviting many of his friends in the music industry. Result is ‘Across’, an very diverse album, but as far as sound is concerned very uniform. The songs are quite intruiging and ‘Across’ is definitely an album that grows on you the more you listen to it. But this is not just your typical studio cd, Perq is definitely worth seeing live.

Even, the opening theme song ‘Bad Thing’ by Jace Everett is superb. It is tongue in cheek, but it still catches the exact spirit of ‘True Blood’. It made us want to hear more of Everett’s all American music. His latest CD: ‘Red Revelations’.

Maker of Myth is the title of a special exhibition on the works by post-impressionist Paul Gauguin. In wintry London, visitors will be treated to colourful French landscapes and lush tropical scenes of Tahite in the Tate Modern.
It is the first major exhibition of the French artist in London over 50 years. Expect brilliant symbolism, inventive sculpture and pioneering ceramics that were key to Gauguin’s unique form of storytelling. Also on display are rarely seen personal letters, sketchbooks, memoirs and journals documenting Gauguin’s travels, all of which allow visitors a peek into the personal life of the roving artist. The exhibition will run till 16 Janaury 2011.

We all felt a little bit lost in the new exhibition center and we surely missed the Parisian atmosphere at this year's Silmo. Besides, it was clear that there were far less visitors.
But thanks to quality instead of quantity, we had an exciting and fun trip around world. It brought us to new destinations in Canada and the United States. It made us speak Spanish in Colombia and we were fortunate to meet the Nigerian ambassador. We caught up with old friends in Japan and touched base with some in Tunisia and Latvia. In Europe, we got acquainted with lovely people in Ireland, Great Britain, Portugal and…

OK, we admit, we can't get over it: we loved The Maritimes of Canada. So, here's one more travel suggestion. PEI's capital Charlottetown has only 35,000 inhabitants, but it rocks! We had so much fun there. You will find yourself dancing in the Olde Dublin pub or even being invited to a local wedding. In the meantime, this town has excellent fine dining restaurants like Lot30 and Sims Corner. The latter one is a great place for 'surf 'n turf'. Just sit at the bar and barman/cook Sam and the local guests will make sure that you will have a memorable evening.

Ever read the Pulitzer prize winning book The Shipping News by Annie Proulx? It is set in Canada's most rugged province Newfoundland. The novel was turned into a movie with Kevin Spacey and Julianne Moore in 2001; especially the art director was given a lot of credits. Most scenes were shot in the very picturesque and most adorable village of Trinity in Newfoundland. Scenes of the book and the movie definitely come back to life when you pay Trinity and its surrounding the well-deserved visit. And if you do, we surely would recommend you to stay one of the originally restored houses of the fisher's loft. Like Spacey and Moore at the time the picture was shot.

What to read this summer? Please read Imperial Bedroom. It’s the new novel by American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis. His first book, Less Than Zero, is one of the signal novels of the 80s about LA’s spoilt beautiful dirty rich brats.
How brilliant to follow the characters of that story 25 years later. Clay, Julian, Blair, Trent and Rip might have been infamous teenagers, they have turned into an even more desperate middle age.
We do not want to give anything away, but be ready for a genuine literary haunting event.

Thinking about a weekend city trip? We are currently staying in Nantes, France. And we are pleasantly surprised. This city reminds us of the better parts of Paris. It is fantastisc to see all the cultural activities organised here in Nantes.
As far as restaurants are concerned: there are plenty of great places with excellent food. Do we have to choose? OK then, our recommendation: La Cigale. You will find this astonishing art-deco styled brasserie in the very heart of the city, very close to the equally beautiful local theatre.
And be sure to pay a visit to Nantes'unique elephant.

The critically acclaimed Italian movie La Dolce Vita by Federico Fellini is in many aspects one of the greatest achievements in world cinema. The famous Trevi fountain scene is a true classic. But also the Persol sunglasses that were introduced via La Dolce Vita.
Actor Marcello Mastroianni made them famous by wearing them in almost every scene. With the sharp suits and the British sports car, the look defined a period. No wonder that the black 649 is still worn with pride by guy of any age.

So what was C-ZONE doing at the romantic Ferme du Chateau de Corroy-le Grand near Brussels, Belgium. Who was getting married? Because this is the perfect spot to tie the knot. Well, bummer, dear friends, we were present at the Belgian optical event. But it was not a disappointment at all. Many opticians made the effort to visit the show and we were happy to see that C-ZONE as a new brand got a lot of attention.
And for those who are interested in getting married at the castle, do not be worried about the catering. It is definitely Michelin guide quality.

In the 60s, there was one men’s frame that stood out: the browline glasses that became known as the Malcolm X glasses. When you look at movies that are set in that era, you will see that they are worn by any character with eye glasses. Kevin Costner wears them in JFK, and they are rather significant on William Dafoe’s face in Mississippi Burning. And of course, they transformed Denzel Washington into Malcolm X for the movie with the same name.
For our upcoming Silmo collection, we took the classsic shape as base inspiration and we re-invented this retro model and made it so ready for today and the next century.

Her Monster Ball tour was announced as the best live show you will see this year. And we were not disappointed. How creative can one person be? This was more than a concert; this visual musical spectacular was one “helluva” ride. Wonder if she will also influence the optical world, since she wears quite some outrageous frames that she designed herself.

Die hard country music lovers were quite surprised when they listened to the new Lady Antebellum album ‘Need You Now’. This was not your typical Nashville sound that they were used to. Or should we call it ‘fusion’...?

Is it a coincidence or is there something magic between The Netherlands and South-Korea? We are very proud of the fact that the C-Zone collection is being produced in Korea, but we are not the only ones who appear to have chemistry with the Koreans. Of course, Dutch soccer coach Guus Hiddink was extremely successful in Korea, but we have a new export product: Dutch jazz singer Wouter Hamel. Hamel's latest album "Nobody's Tune" with seductive, catchy songs hasd gone platinum and his concert tour in Seoul was totally sold out.

Recently, very coincidentally we met costume designer Michael Clancy. He is the one responsible for the dazzling blue dress worn by Nia Vardalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. But he is also the one who gave Elijah Wood that halicinating pair of glasses in Everything Is Illuminated. Michael told us how he searched all over the net to find a suitable frame. He promised that he would surely think of C-ZONE next time he would need another cool pair of spectacles.

“So, what movie defines you most?”, she asked. It was one of those evenings when you discuss motion pictures with friends. I had to think for a moment. That was not such an easy question. I could have come up an epic movie like ‘Amadeus’ or a classic like ‘Gone With The Wind’. But it had to be ‘The Big Chill’, that 80s movie about a group of friends who come together at a funeral after they have not seen each other for ages. Somehow, that movie had it all: a great story on (lost) friendship, a superb cast of very promising actors and an outstanding musical score. And what a great pair of glasses Jeff Goldblum’s wearing.

Vlieland is the second-least densely populated municipality in the Netherlands and on the islands, you are not allowed to drive your car. We could not think of a better way to spend a few relaxing days with our good friends.

Writing our first order for Namibia during MIDO brought us back to a country of which we have some real fond memories. Namibia is one amazing country. Highlight of our stay was Wolwedans’ Boulders Camp, which is tucked away amidst the grandeur of large granite rocks. Situated 45 kilometres from the nearest settlement, it gives you the exclusive chance to get up close and personal with nature. And don’t worry about the facilities. It’s all there, even a private chef who prepares delicious local dishes such as kudu and springbok.

Last Summer, we returned after 5 years, and it had lost nothing of its charm.

The Dutch movie ‘War in Wintertime’ was well-received by the Oscar committee. The year 2009 was definitely the come back of Pear Jam. Their 1991 debut album ‘10’ was re-mastered and at the end of the year, a complete new album ‘Backspacer’ was released. This new master piece was chosen by Rolling Stone magazine as the best album of year. It almost makes you forget that front man Eddie Vedder wrote the brilliant score to the Sean Penn’s overwhelming road movie ‘Into The Wild’. Unfortunately, the cd does not last more than 40 minutes, but we solved that problem by pushing the repeat button.
